I think part of it was that Obama's election stunned the rest of the world and they wanted to give the US a pat on the head. They were eager to encourage us in our new identities as thoughtful global citizens. We sure showed them.

Well the world was pretty damn happy W was out and thought Obama could take America to a new place. Sadly white people really dont like change.

If this had happened next year, and he was elected after world-antagonizing-Trump, I would sort of understand the Nobel committee and world giving a collective “jfc thank god that’s over,” but at the time? C’mon.

You seem to forget that Obama came up as the US was trying to wind down a Global Torture Regime, and a Global Regime Change doctrine, and weather a Global Recession. Oh yeah, and two unwinnable wars in the middle east/SW Asia.

It’s not just the Nobel Prize. Trump has always wanted to be accepted by the kind of cultural and intellectual elite that President Obama was warmly embraced by.
