It really pains me to say it but he drove a 1966 (I think) red mustang very close to this one. White stripes and limo tint including the front window (!). It's a shame that the total assholes sometimes drive the nicest cars. I heard he totaled it sometime after graduation. Shame.

DONK!

1986-1991 Vanagon. With the following caveats:

Other than the super high-end Duesies and the like which other cars of that era had OHV engines?

Remember, this WAS set in the future...

If you're going there you'll probably need a place to stay. A 4WD place to stay with a granny gear. Might as well go with a Vanagon Westfalia Syncro Camper. Since these were made in South Africa until 2004 you should be able to fine plenty of spare parts.

Unrelated to this particular QOTD, where are the AOTDs? I miss 'em!

Vanagon 4 speed transmission. What were they thinking? Oh sure, some Autobahn driving Germs got to have a 5 speed as an option but us Yanks had to do with the 4. Sad thing is, the gears are perfectly spaced given the engine's anemic power as long as you're not driving over 50mph. Anything faster and an extra gear

...and an early 196? VW bus slammed to the asphalt.

Since we're talking cool and not run of the mill awesome I'll have to omit my brothers 911. So it's a tie between two rear engined air cooled beaters. In no particular order:

I'd be scared.

You're right, tho. The CRX is one of those cars that seem like disposable commodities at the time but are gold today.

Back Seat? CRX? Really?

Correction... That should say 2005 Scion xA.

Alright, that is downright sexy. Please don't add too much water to the soup!

Year = 1988

In order...

1st Gen Toyota MR2?

Motor Trend Classics did a writeup on this some time back. The front door pivots on the center axis and the steering wheel tilts out of the way Isetta style. The seating position appears rather awkward, tho. Oh, and apparently this "Dodge" contains lots of Ford parts as well.

The 1964 Dodge A-100 Deora. Everybody has probably had the Hot Wheels version of this and not realized that it is a real running and driving vehicle.
