Recently finished D.T. Max's biography of Wallace, and I had a similar experience. Even mere summations of Wallace's fiction left me befuddled and frustrated. Not my cup of tea, I guess, but that's alright; I'm quite fond of his essays.

Oh, yeah, he's easily the only good thing in that movie. But that actually makes me hate the movie even more. Dafoe is terrific in a movie that doesn't deserve him.

It's a gorgeous movie to just kick back and bathe in. It's also batshit insane, and the all-over-the-place acting only contributes to the lunacy. I completely understand why many people dislike it, but their reasons for disliking it are probably the very same reasons why I love it.
