There was a spot that violated the minimum bend radius when the trunk lid was opened & closed. The wires eventually fatigue. On mine the trunk lamp stopped working first, but the camera never failed.

I’d have to disagree with the “why most” part. It’s usually about distance chains can link two shafts at a greater distance with less mass & complexity than gears would. This particular application doen’t really have an issue with distance.
