In most cars that “cinch” feature is called “child seat lock” and it’s activated by pulling the belt all the way out and letting it retract to the ratchet click that is snug against the child seat that you’re attempting to secure.
Can you extend that crank arm to encircle the whole tube? That would eliminate this particular mode of failure. The whole tube would take the stress instead of just 1/3.
I will agree there are reasons to turn your lights off, but at this point, that’s what should take effort.
Torsens use a bias ratio. If you have 0 traction on one side, you’re just going to spin it like it’s open. Unless it’s a T2-R with a preload. The good thing now is with TC controlled independent braking, the brake can provide an artificial traction to the side that is slipping.
While the tires would help, locking differentials and 4wd would help more.
Hypothermia does crazy things. Disorientation is one of them. I’ll bet he’d stripped most of his clothing off, too, because he thought it was “too hot”.
