You don’t have to actually make it in the thinner circle. But you do get a bonus if you do make it in the thinner circle. You just want the circle to be small and at least make it in the grey circle.

That’s not wrong. The smaller the circle the better chance of catching the pokemon. But if the circle is large and you throw pokeball in it you get a 10xp nice throw bonus.
