Until then you can watch "Grand Prix" from 1966, great racing movie, the story is almost identical.

Not anymore, back in my day (1993ish), it was a mandatory 12 month service for 18 years old male passed the health/mental tests.

Exact same thing happened with a BMP-1 while I was in service (Hungarian Army), the trailer was fine, however the bottom plate of the APC broke open for 30 cm long crack, we were joking about the titanic like accident, our Lt. was not amused...
