8% is crazy today. Rates were ~2x back then but even then 8% seems high. Maybe there is/was a large default rate which makes these unsecured loans more expensive. At 8% you should refinance those loans. And pay extra to reduce the principal.

I consider myself a moderate. I also don’t agree with student loan forgiveness. Maybe I’m old fasioned but I believe if you agree to a loan and spend the money, then you are responsible for repaying the loan. I don’t care if it is a student loan, a home loan or a business loan.
