Since episode 9 ends with the audience thinking Donna did, then I’m leaning towards Cliff poisoned him, the fall in the elevator was an accident (it wasn’t actually fixed), and Donna is covering it up.
There really aren’t any examples I can think of of an artist doing this in their prime (stronger voice, better musician) and spending the money so that guys don’t sound like generic sound alike.
