Gary Oldman is spectacular in this movie.
Gary Oldman is spectacular in this movie.
God, when did all of you hating on this show become so fucking jaded?
I think “Last Tango in Paris” was an Italian flick.
Even Leon character finds it cringey, and that’s what saved it for me. He very specifically makes sure it never goes beyond platonic because he knows it’s wrong. Which is more than can be said for the director, a fact I only learned much later in life.
Cracked had a listicle years ago that included an entry about Leon. In the international cut, she tries to coax him into sex but he turns her down:
I’m with you, it was definitely cringey at the time. I always thought part of the point of the movie was that the relationship was all kinds of unhealthy for both of them?
I never really got it was a romance movie at all. What I took from it was this girl lost her family, mostly shitty except her little brother, and ended up being given care and consideration by this man. Since she never felt that sort of connection with anyone except her brother, she was confused by what it meant and…
I’m not saying that my ethics radar was better tuned than most people’s even back then, or that I was more worldly, or that I graduated high school and can read, or that I don’t go poopsie in my pantsies once in a while, et cetera, but I actually thought that movie was cringey at the time. Portman was 12 or 13 when…
Here’s the thing about Nate. Because of his authoritarian dad, he’s naturally gravitated to and kowtowed to anyone who he might consider an “alpha” without any second-guessing about their motives. It happened with Ted, and that was part of Nate’s problem in S2 - because Ted was his “alpha” and was nice and kind to…
I’m not sure why Manuel hated the Coach Beard press conference bit so much. It was funny. And it was in character — it’s not at all impossible to imagine Beard having opinions on classic rock guitarists that are both weird and weirdly intense.
I’d say Jimi, myself. (And funnily enough I just realized you could make this call by comparing their versions of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)“ if you wanted to.)
Wasn’t that debunked, though, and Clapton never actually said that? (a few seconds later) Just googled, and yeah, according to Snopes, the Clapton/Prince quote is a fabrication. (Not taking away from Prince, who was, indeed, a spectacular guitarist.)
Dear Ted Lasso writers,
Ted Lasso is a heartwarming comedy where things get rough but always finds a silver lining or hope.
Hendrix is the G.O.A.T. but would also have ended any debate scene before it began.
Manuel, maybe comedy reviewing isn’t for you?
As a huge Led Zep hater, this episode gets an automatic A+++. Everything Beard said is 100 percent accurate about Jimmy Page. I’ll take Walsh over him any day.
That's some red-hot social commentary there, comrade.
As for the guitarist question: my gut says the answer is indeed “the guy from Cream”. But the guy from Cream himself said that it was Prince.
Maybe you need to take a break from reviewing Bill Lawrence shows, Manuel.
