Zoom generally refers to the ability to adjust the focal length on a lens. Zoom factor is the distance factor between the minimum and maximum focal lengths. A very wide lens can still "zoom". For instance, I can zoom my 8-16mm Sigma lens between 8 and 16mm and it is no where near being a telephoto lens.
