I think it sounds more like getting a contractor to fix the glass door on the front of your house only to have the original builder come along and change all your locks.

It’s valid IF it really stopped working once you change the buttons, it only bricks itself until you update it, and those updates come months apart from each other so the thief will have a few months window to get everything in your phone.
