He may have done this simply to show Rutgers that he doesn’t approve. If he waits until they are back in the locker room then people may think that he has no problem with showing up the losing team.

Kicking deep was absolutely the best play. The defense couldn’t get off the field, again, but if they had, the improved field position makes a game winning field goal much more likely. An onside kick gives you a small chance of recovery but a much greater chance of needing a touchdown to win.
