If Apple came in at $299, how big of a difference would it have made?

I don't care about the optical drive at all - but I do care about upgrading the RAM for dirt cheap compared to what Apple charges and I'd also like to the option to do what I want with either an SSD/HDD slot. Or maybe even remove the optical drive itself and load it up with a HDD and throw an SSD in the hard drive bay.
