Most Best Buy locations have a battery drop-off bin for spent batteries. I assume that they’re properly recycled by Best Buy after drop-off, but at the very least those potentially hazardous batteries will be out of your possession.

My saving grace is that the only times I need to fly into/out of New York is off-peak-travel-season. I actually prefer LGA because it’s more convenient relative to my destinations in Manhattan, but next trip I might have to go with Newark and suck up the extra travel time.
