Just reminds me of some stupidity my friends and I would spout in high school: if an airplane’s black box always survives a crash, why don’t they make the whole plane out of the same stuff?

Maybe they became more efficient at some point, but (as a 30 year-old now) growing up and even in early adulthood, here in the US the adage was to replace your smoke detector’s battery about every 6 months; the easy way to remember is to change the battery when switching to/from daylight savings time.
