Yep. It’s all about team success and narrative. Jeter is supposedly super clutch (and his overall postseason slash line is actually slightly better than his career numbers), but he hit .148/.179./259 in the 2001 World Series as the Yankees lost to the D-Backs in 7 and .200/.333/.233 (compared to “choker” A-Rod’s…
Clutch does not exist. Jeter’s career postseason slash line is only marginally better than A-Rod’s - yet Jeter is considered to be the epitome of a clutch player while A-Rod is considered a choker. Jeter hit worse than A-Rod during the Yankees’ 2004 collapse against the Red Sox and hit .148/.179/.259 (!!) in the 2001…
It does not remove all the blame from Kershaw, but 8 of those 15 runs charged to him scored after he left the game. His bullpen has allowed 8 of 15 inherited runners to score since 2008. That’s pretty awful. Fangraphs did a write up on it today.
Fun fact: Peyton Manning’s passser rating goes from 96.5 in the regular season to 87.4 in the postseason.
If Corey Seager fields a fairly routine ground ball in the 7th, or Kershaw gets one of two probably-strike threes called against Harper, today we’re talking about how Kershaw struck out 11-12 and walked 1 on short rest. That’s why this is just a narrative.
No. Kershaw and pitchers like Kershaw (if there is such a thing) are the reason that teams reach the playoffs.
He just needs to give 110% and concentrate on the fundamentals.

My coworker was in the Navy and he always points out that people’s perception of the armed forces versus reality is always interesting. The super-buff, huge army guys? Those are dudes who are stateside and have time and resources to work-out. They are on base.
