I am beginning to think that there are major and minor gems and Rose Quartz was definitely a Major gem. When she gave herself up to produce Steven, not all of what was Rose could fit, that residual re-formed into what is now Lion.
Garnet’s fusion is so tightly nit that she is essentially one gem for all practical purposes. When she fused with Amethyst, she came apart as Garnet, not Sapphire and Ruby.
