I would echo this comment in that setting up a raspberry pi is a great way to learn. As others have said many times, setting up a NAS, Samba/NFS or some other kind of file server is a great way to start and really practical.

Shoot, wasn't sure how to edit my post... What I mean is when the Paste-Special Dialog box is open, you can select ONE of the options with an additional keystroke...
I'm a heavy excel user, and by far, my favorite is the Copy, Paste-Special Combo:
It's a way to recall your most recent history item (aka what you typed last). So if you were to hit the up arrow, you would get the same thing if you typed in !!!
If you want to go up to the parent directory (as opposed to back or forwards), use ALT+UP
After reading this article, I started searching for some apps for the iPhone—
On top of that, something I find helpful is to clean while cooking.
This is great advice! I jumped straight from a conventional shoe to the Vibrams, but it took me over 2-3 months of work to get used to them. It was a very slow start, but eventually got very accustomed to them. I saw my times go down with very little effort because of the change of my stride efficiency (which is…
I had been looking into tackling a similar project (using 'motion' for my Pi) along with using a temperature sensor. I've gotten the 'motion' part working great, and really simple to use. Not much luck with the temp yet, still working on it...

Maybe it's just my computer, but the Mail app is significantly slower than Postbox is at loading messages. I think I also had an issue with the Win8-Mail not actually deleting mail when I hit "delete" as I found it later in All Mail in gmail (although I think there is a fix for that somewhere).
I love some of these gems! I would like to point out for the "Search Current Site," if you're using DuckDuckGo, just remove the "search" so it looks like this:
Wallpaper at work. My coworkers think it's pretty awesome too :)
I think AutoHotkey deserves a mention in here, at least under further reading or something. It would belong under the Text Expansion section. I realize it's not totally a beginner's tool as it requires getting a bit dirty, but it's quick and totally under the users control.
Well I guess that's a good question, as I've asked myself that a few times too.
