I’m not that far yet, but I might be getting there. There are 10 movies listed here and probably only 3 are intriguing to me. Although it looked like Awkwafina might be in one of the movies, so I’ll make it 4.

The issue is that, when you strip everything away, the plot of RPO is bare bones at best and is in service of dropping pop culture references rather than telling a story. The literal climax of the book has the protagonist quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail verbatim.

Yeah that’s another thing, Weir’s female characters at worst are just underdeveloped and one note (Again, this just from reading The Martian, I have not read his other novel.). Which just seems to be a problem with his characters in general.
