I loved Jackson's LOTR, so I hate to keep voicing reservations about this, but...

Regardless of any of this, I will still stubbornly insist that my favorite Tyrannosaurus Rex was NOT covered with feathers like some kind of giant chicken. It's the principle of the thing.

I know that crackpot L. Ron Hubbard considered the OT3 level of Scientology that introduced the evil space overlord Xenu to be "space opera", but I'm not sure he met all these requirements with his mediocre SF writing skills.

As someone who in the past often played Lizardman (or Lizardfolk if you prefer) characters in D&D, I often stuck with the Neutral alignment and its various forms simply because that's been the case for Lizardman NPC's since the race was introduced in 1974. Since I often played them as somewhat heroic,

"...in order to pull out the femur to use as a shiv is awesome."

Honestly, I'm not too broken up about this decision. The commentary between the fanfic excerpts was funny, but if I want to track down nightmarish NSFW erotica about popular SF/fantasy characters violating each other in increasingly creative ways, I really don't need io9 to help me out with that. Thanks anyway.

Yep, Peter Jackson missed the boat on this one.

Unlike certain others...

Let's not omit the only image that can accompany this story...

Any romantic notions you may have had about living an adventurous, unencumbered, freewheeling lifestyle after society collapses abruptly disappear the first time you have to shit in the woods with no more toilet paper available.

Peter Jackson says: "The trouble with redesigning dragons I've found is… you very quickly can go into science fiction territory.."

There's a bizarre, mid-1980s TV Halloween cartoon called "Witch's Night Out" that I used to have an ancient VHS recording of that is now lost to the mists of time. The dialogue was wry and mature for a cartoon TV special of the time, and I'd love the chance to see it again. I'm amazed I've had such a hard time

The uncensored version is currently up on YouTube, just FYI.

As a lifelong Godzilla fan (who is NOT a fan of the 1998 US version), I'm very curious to see how this movie will compare with the 2014 Godzilla reboot. I have to say that the new Godzilla had better be slick and groundbreaking if it intends to compete with del Toro's usual level of quality.

That seems to be a very firm certainty of all the thoughts and intentions that pass through the heads of other people that think differently from you. I wish I had such a level of certainty (or some might say "faith" in that certainty) that gave me license to assume my superiority in social situations without getting

No, I don't think Frazetta had any input on Bakshi's LOTR. Bakshi just sort of borrowed the Death Dealer aesthetic for the Ringwraiths.

Hmm..."These people", you say — meaning all religious people? Isn't that the same kind of generalization that results in certain religious folk characterizing atheists as all being amoral, self-centered and arrogant? My point (as an atheist who in the past had religious beliefs, just for full disclosure) is that

This ad, which has been popping up all over YouTube lately, has me thinking about the "smug atheist" approach. While I think it's admirable to give atheist parents and children some additional social resources, is it honestly productive to insinuate that any religious person the atheist child comes in contact with is

Right, because people are always so truthful when given sex surveys.

Backyard trampolines are hazardous enough, but that trampoline bridge looks like it's going to kill or cripple most of those simulated people hurtling through the air.
