If he's playing games, he certainly shouldn't rely on Wine. Any Windows games I can run without switching OS is a bonus (Warcraft 3 and Age of Empires 2, pretty much), but it's worth him reinstalling XP rather than restricting what he plays.

If you hate Rhythmbox try Banshee. It adresses a lot of its shortcomings. Exaile is another fairly complete player with a tree-style library, if that was your problem.

Nautilus, Firefox and Gedit in a dockbarx launcher (similar to Windows 7's launcher). Plus the standard tools: programs menu, systray, time, show desktop - plus a system monitor (which I find invaluable, and haven't found a good windows equivalent) and kill program button.
