There's lots to be said for the UI of the default Windows Remote Desktop client. The RDP protocol is no slug performance wise either.
I use jfilesync to handle manually synchronizing files when need be.

Unlike the way Google uses it as a "not our fault if it breaks," beta in the rest of the world means that it has all the features, and all the bugs. In other words, the developer finished writing it, but it's only had cursory testing. Expect it to be broken or do horrible things to your data.

Cool, but it doesn't fix my biggest Amazon complaint. Ever since the site redesign was rolled out, I see no way to sort search results by price or review score outside the book section.
I recommend the KDE app SoundKonverter above all others. It is the only utility I've seen that will get tags right every time, even converting from WMA. It'll also fill out the composer tag going from flac to MP3 or Ogg. The gtk+ SoundConverter tends to fail at tagging in corner cases.

Sensory deprivation more than insomnia leads to productivity. Totally depriving yourself of other activities (more difficult these days with the ubiquity of internet access) makes it easier to focus your efforts on the project at hand.
