The original is to be considered obscure? That makes me sad. I remember watching House of Cards and both sequels with my mother, and we were living in the States at that point so it's not as if it wasn't available to American audiences.

For me this isn't New Year's Day as much as it is One Week Countdown 'Til Justified Is Back…

I'm tepid - I just saw the banner when I logged into Netflix and I thought this was a candidate for Least Necessary Adaptation Ever. But I'm willing to keep an open mind. Ian Richardson was impeccable, but if there's any one who can maybe come close to that bar it's Spacey.

Dammit 2012, you were supposed to be so much cooler than you turned out…

@DesertDweller79:disqus - I agree on both. The musical does a marvellous job of compacting the massive storyline, and whatever details it omits, it always gets the tone right (one of the great benefits of musical scoring!).

@avclub-019009b3dba521659466e53ec350163d:disqus - the unabridged book has copious amounts of detail to set scenes in which the most minor details occur (I remember working through pages and pages dedicated solely to the slang of 1830's Paris). I would applaud an adaptation that could cleverly work those pieces into

My nostalgia wires are all crossed on this one. I used to love this musical but the horridly obnoxious fangirls have sucked all the joy out of it for me as time has passed.

Seriously - Les Miserables is far from lacking in adaptations, even in recent history. Granted, most are highly selective in what parts of the book make it to screen, but there have been more than a few worthy performances.

I had held out hope that the movie would be at least half decent, but scene after scene proved me wrong as the Wachowski's piled on ever worse choices in their adaptation.

Pete Holmes has won me over - he's a massive dork, but so joyful and enthusiastic with his guests that his interviews are fun to listen to, while also occasionally getting into some deeper thinking. It is WTF-lite (Holmes openly admits to copying WTF), but I'm the sort of massive comedy nerd who has an appetite for

When I was at one of their shows early this year it dawned on me as I watched all these crazy kids rush the front of the stage that TMBG had been with me since grade school days, and how awesome it was/is that I still had/have the opportunity to enjoy them when so many other bands barely last past a second album.
