I'm not necessarily in disagreement with you, but based on the
"mini-commentaries" they offer up each season it seems to me that they
are still all about slaughtering sacred cows, but coming at it from an angle
no one else has approached yet. Sometimes they have a clear position
they want to take, but most of the time

Damn, Jack Huston's got a mane on him…

Stone and Parker have always had a pointedly "nothing's sacred" attitude, which I think umpteen seasons and 200+ episodes have borne out…

This show gets points for both Lances being at least more than a little suspicious of Oliver. I think even the most passive tv viewer has had their fill of supposedly smart and/or intuitive characters who are beyond oblivious to concealed plots happening right under their noses.

I had the same thing happen with Vampire Diaries. It even took me awhile to convince myself that I was enjoying the show because it had actual qualities beyond Somerhalder's sneering and nose flaring.

So does this mean TLC will go into the lead in the race to the bottom with E! and Bravo? I'd investigate further, but I can't stand the smell…

I'm still very much on board with this show. I like that it hasn't gone for the obvious beats. I like that whoever is on the off side of the love triangle is neither a complete putz nor a cartoonish douchebag. For instance, Avery may not be right for Scarlett, and we have every reason to anticipate them splitting up,
