They got a bad rap. That was common industry practice in the 60's (hell the Wrecking Crew probably played on 60% of the songs that made the top 40 during the decade) - they were just the first ones that were found out.

I liked the episode but I wonder if it was unintentionally cribbing from the TNG episode “The Outcast”. The plots seemed very similar and had a similar downer ending.
