No, for major studio productions 1980 is about right. The Steadicam (I spelled it wrong earlier) was invented in the mid-1970s but only hit the mainstream in 1980. One of the best uses of Steadicam was by the late John G. Avildsen: the montage in "Rocky" (1976)

There's actually a much simpler explanation. Steadycams started becoming widely available in 1980 - they added these scenes because they could. It was the 1980's version of CGI.

These two are far too talented to be stuck in a reheated remake of "Overboard" (which was a pastiche of similar films of the 1930's). They'd be better off doing a Derbez original script with a young director with a sense of timing.
