Jalopnik has had several articles over the years that I read as having a theme of something like “making cars is hard.” This appears to be a fairly accurate statement.

Economy cars were never just packed with exciting designs across the industry, with few exceptions. I’m not sure why basic crossovers would be different.

My next car will be an EV, probably within the next 2 years. Barring some galactic quality-control shift, I won’t even be cross-shopping Tesla. They absolutely broke the barrier and did wonders to get EVs more in the mainstream, but they still put out a ‘meh’ product (IMO) and basically, just don’t seem reliable…

In the private sector I think you’re right but I’d be suspicious about freebies, even on a trial basis, in government contracts.

No cost trials for cheap equipment is actually pretty common, even with legitimate companies. 

Yeah, I figure nobody but active Merc fans are too sorry to see them deal with some difficulties. Toto doing a little public whining is just the gravy.

I think the main issue with Mercedes is that they didn’t factor in that much. The team is used to being out in front and not really racing for position, so the crash budget that might be larger for other teams gets reallocated to some other area. Like, I don't think the totality of the damage Merc sustained in 2020…
