I probably didn’t articulate the point well enough. I’m not saying the story was never there, but you, as a player, have little to do with it. Did I know I was shooting Russians in GR 1? Sure, but I didn’t care why, they were in front of me.

I’ve never really played Splinter Cell, but R6 and GR have never had enthralling political backgrounds. You’re soldiers, follow orders and complete the mission.

I recently did the Machete order and personally wouldn’t recommend it. By the time you finish ESB you don’t really need a deep dive on Vader (if anything, watching the prequels lessen’s the character for me) and exploring his origins doesn’t add any value to the story you’re currently “in” - mainly because the prequel
