Nonononono, you are wrong about that being the staple of gaming: The truest form of gaming is playing single player games, alone (partly because the person in question doesn´t have any friends), preferably in some dark cave where the sun never shines.

I think the real improvements in games comes to what new we can do as game designer and as players :-). Like if we look at the Zelda series it has advanced a lot from where it started in 1986 to now when we look at Zelda U now.

Well it is. Except for Watch_Dogs. That game sucks especially hard on Wii U. I’m not biting the hand that feeds, I’m punching the face that didn’t just cancel it. It was more damaging than anything else. It’s in my opinion another Aliens: Colonial Marines.
