Nonononono, you are wrong about that being the staple of gaming: The truest form of gaming is playing single player games, alone (partly because the person in question doesn´t have any friends), preferably in some dark cave where the sun never shines.
I think the real improvements in games comes to what new we can do as game designer and as players :-). Like if we look at the Zelda series it has advanced a lot from where it started in 1986 to now when we look at Zelda U now.
