You'd probably at least get offered chopsticks at Chinese restaurants in the 80s. IIRC, McDonalds even included them with chicken nuggets in the late 80s when they introduced a new sauce. (Grew up in the Midwest in the 80s, definitely saw people try to use chopsticks in the 80s)
