Dressing in a culturally appropriate way is different than dressing not to be sexually harassed.

Yeah but dressing conservatively doesn’t help, really. I get catcalled and harassed just as frequently in winter when I’m wearing a snow parka and hat as i do in summer wearing shorts and a tshirt. Im not the only one who experiences this. What gives??? Am I still dressed slutty in my slutty, full length, down filled

WHEN ARE MEN TOLD TO DRESS CONSERVATIVELY TO AVOID HARASSMENT AND ASSAULT? Your point would be understandable if harassment were distributed equally. Surprise, it’s not. Men don’t have to worry if they’re “showing too much skin” and women will verbally or physically assault them. We’re telling you to fucking knock it

It evolved from the traditional ceremony where younger family members pour water gently on the elders’ hands, and the elders sprinkle water on the children’s head - all for good luck. That’s why sometimes you’ll see pictures with white smears on their faces from ceremonial herbs and whatnot.

I just feel like it’s really dumb to act like dressing conservatively doesn’t help even a little bit.

Happy Songkran to you!

Why did your ex husband leave?

I get where you’re coming from, but the article states that it’s Thai women themselves that are pushing back against the suggestion to dress more conservatively in order to avoid harassment. I assume they know their own culture.

By the way, Happy Thai New Year to everyone!

And on a side note, can we please stop shaming women for being slutty. This is our goal.

gross

The Bangkok Post reports that Sutthipong Chulcharoen, department director-general of the Department of Local Administration, announced that there would be alcohol-free zones for the celebrants, and suggested tourists dress “conservatively” during the event, especially women, so that “they do not fall victim to sex

“it puts the onus on women for preventing their own harassment, rather than targeting the men who are doing the harassing.”

I was once catcalled from a moving car while wearing a huge parka, running pants, and sneakers in the middle of winter. It’s infuriating because it doesn’t matter what you do or what you wear and responding or ignoring it both have downsides.

How come no one ever mistakes Kevin Smith for a hockey player? Just once, I want some random stranger to go up to him, force a hockey stick into his hands, and make him play against his will.

Jesus.

To be fair, you have very nice feet.

The upside of routinely working 14-hour days (most without internet access) is you don’t have time to read many comments. Still, thank you for the kindness!

Diana, I know you’ve gotten some grief over your Cosby coverage recently, but I think you’re doing a stellar job on this. You’re a top notch writer.
