that is a small partof it. The other part is registering to the VLR (visitor location register) of the market you landed in. That lookup also has to check your HLR (home location register) to ensue you are allowed in the network. This does take time but not a lot.

while I use airplane mode primarily to sleep, it's best use is to reregister with the network. In areas where coverage is weak, you may not roam to another network with a better signal. If you reregister, your phone may only see the better network and register there.

the thing about alcohol sales is it's very state dependant. In Mass the club stores have to let non members buy, so even a bigger savings (compared to other state bought, and taxed alcohol)
