I think the biggest reason we don’t see more closure/grieving scenes, is that J.J. wanted to keep as much of the plot secret, and didn’t want to risk having anything leaked like that on-set photo of Luke.
It’s funny that I haven’t seen anyone else bring thing up, especially with the comparisons to ANH, that Rey’s fight at the junkyard is the TFA version of Luke’s fight with the Tusken Raiders, with the staff serving as the gaffi stick of course.
