Yup, that’s my rationale for liking the spartan interior of my BMW 328i base model. No iDrive or Nav, no plastic wood, pretty basic...

Softly sprung, high ground clearance SUVs serve mainly as a solution to the problem posed by our decaying roadways and apparent incompetence to fix them. I like a firm, taut suspension, but I also recognize that they don’t mesh well with our roads. If we keep going in the direction we have been, eventually there won’t

EVs do NOT have CVTs, to my knowledge. You’re thinking of hybrids. An EV usually needs a single direct drive gear ratio (that does require “gears” and even a differential) unless it is going for a land speed record. Tesla “D” models have two motors, each with a different ratio, to provide better efficiency.

So, as for ordinary EVs, the sounds one hears are mostly things that are masked by the operation of an ICE, except in cases where the ICE is effectively muffled, for example your typical old school Caddy or Lincoln, or similar. Tell me, why has no one ever complained about being nearly run over by one of those cars?

Check it out! The battery does not drop when you are sitting in traffic, because the “engine” is not running. Also, why is running out of gas less of a worry, than running out of juice? There are electrical outlets almost everywhere, which cannot be said of gas stations. But most people know how to avoid running out,

No transmission either; just direct drive. Reverse by turning the motor backwards.

And if you have enough space to slow down gradually at the end of the run, you can regenerate about 80% of that 2 kWh.

You can switch ludicrous mode on anytime, but the performance you get will depend somewhat on the state of charge. NB: the all-out performance of an ICE car depends to about the same degree on the state of charge of the gas tank, except it favors an empty tank rather than a full one.

They don’t “brick” themselves when they get old; they just lose capacity. The Tesla battery guarantee is based on testing to 3000 cycles, which with daily charging is over 8 years. Except that daily charging for a 25 mile commute is only about 10% of a full charge cycle, so make that 80 years for most people. Taxi

There is a charging station at every residence in the world that has an exterior electrical outlet or an outlet in or near the garage. Still think we need 10,000 more? Admittedly, those do require hours for recharging, but that’s where cars sit for hours routinely. Slick approach, eh? Too bad we don’t have running

With all due respect, you sir, are functionally blind to a number of things that don’t fit your worldview, which I’m sure makes it very difficult to find superchargers. People are racking up billions of miles in electric vehicles, so it cannot be as difficult as you make it out to be, and well worth the trouble when

Hey, let’s not be turning our noses up at anyone actually *trying* to build an electric roadster. That would certainly be worth as much as a Bolt or a Model 3 if it existed and was at all comparable in performance, and why would it not be?

I put white racing stripes on this black car and called it “Skunk” but didn’t have the nerve to photograph it that way...

Also, this show endeared itself to me forever through two acts of respect and courage: 1) renovating a 1963 Corvair Monza convertible, AND 2) a full electric conversion update of a 1985 Maserati Biturbo! The latter proved forever and beyond a doubt that this was not merely a nostalgia party and that Mike and Edd’s

After a decade of watching this fantastic show, during which Edd’s labor was never factored into the value of the restored cars, it has been great recently to at least see Edd’s hours of work racked up so one could make an estimate of the true value added. We all learned a heck of a lot about what is possible for the

Why do we never see anything her on Jalopnik about that fantastic cable show “Wheeler Dealers”?

I’m sure y’all think it looks “goofy” with that flat rear deck, eh?

The Tesla battery is much easier than a gasoline tank to drop and replace. But they seem to last forever, and are guaranteed for 8 yrs, and unlimited miles.
