Everyone wasn’t obsessed with the 1980s, only the creator of the Oasis was. As a result, those seeking to understand the creator and the secrets of the Oasis immersed themselves in that culture as well. I seriously doubt anyone in 2040 outside of the hardcore gunters knew anything about the 80s.
