I'm of the opinion that the hidden irony of Bloodborne's plot is that it turns out the hyper-dimensional alien beings known as the Great Ones are actually relatively well-intentioned (albeit the results of those good intentions were…less than okay), but most of the humans in the game are deliberately cruel.
