I agree that it’s not exactly groundbreaking, but IMO it does make a difference that what is arguably the film’s main protagonist is queer.
The film is moody and gorgeous and worth it already for that first sequence, one of the most otherworldly scenes I’ve ever seen in a film. At the same time, I finally found the film so ambiguous and elliptic, it ended up vague and almost kind of arbitrary: it could have been Amador - or not. He’s so internalised, he…
I’m with StefanJammers on this. Depending on the kid, sure, it may be the best decision not to meet them or introduce the person you’re dating to them, but such a categorical “Do not meet the kids until x months into the relationship!” strikes me as odd, to say the least. Meeting them doesn’t automatically mean that…
The ‘80s original was also done as a TV series; it’s how I remember it. I only knew that there was a film version much later. In my defense, I was six when the film was released. As far as I know, the film came out in 1981, the TV series was broadcast in 1984/85.
What if I think that Snyder was trying to make the uncomfortableness the point but that he’s neither talented enough nor able to examine his own fetishisation of stylised violence to make it work? Do you still need to avoid me? (It’s easy enough to do so.)
I don’t think I’ll ever get this observation (I’ve read it from others as well). For me it was 100% clear that the fall in question in Thor: Ragnarok was basically played like a comedic pratfall along the lines of a Wyle E. Coyote cartoon. The tone, the staging, it all pointed towards the moment being funny, and I’m…
People keep saying this, but they tend to talk about Lara Croft as the character from the original games. This is a film based on the recentish reboot, and the character is very much *not* an Angelina Jolie type. I’ve liked Vikander in most of what I’ve seen her and definitely think she’d be up to this take on Lara…
Not sure I buy Six Feet Under as much of a response to 9/11, though obviously the topic was omnipresent at the time. Battlestar Galactica? Definitely. But I think SFU would’ve been pretty much exactly the same series (except for the occasional comment by one of the character) without 9/11.
No need to miss Rock Band. RB4 + the expansion Rivals are there and they’re still great fun. Not perfect, and some great features fell by the wayside, but if you’ve got an Xbox or PS4, the game is happy to welcome you back - and there’s even a chance you’ll be able to take your songs with you.
Lazarus is well worth playing, as it captures all that's great about U5 and expands in fun ways. There are some limitations to the Dungeon Siege engine, but the good far outweighs the frustrating.
