So do you mean that we’re living in the timeline where von Ludendorff advanced too far at the Marne because he really wanted a cronut? Or is there a recipe out there somewhere for Kaiser Wilhelm’s Hot Chicken?

Not entirely. I’d call it a leap, not a non sequitur. I would double-check research coming out of for-profit colleges, because most of them don’t support research well if at all. (Though some may.) They’re designed to support selling lots of seats in classes at a low price. Some of them are even designed for turning…
It is called the “Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act” - no mention of “stimulus” in there. Putting it in my emergency fund provides for aid, relief, and economic security, if not today, then someday. Plus my bank can always opt to stimulate the economy by lending it out. (Or as a cash reserve to pay out…
There’s a place near me that makes a magnificently thin crust - so much so that doing take-out just isn’t worth it. It’s great in the restaurant, edible right when I get home, and a soggy disappointment when I go back for seconds. But with this tip, I’m wondering if they’re open during the pandemic.
I kind of doubt that a month or two of lower carbon emissions changes anything over the context of decades of pollution. The nitrogen dioxide is interesting, though, because the EPA’s page on NO2 pollution points out that excess nitrogen in the air becomes excess nitrogen in the water and feeds algal blooms. It’ll be…
I’m kind of interested how that will play out, though. Sure, it’s bad for the oil companies, and the locations where they’re major employers. But I’d expect a slide in demand to lead to lower prices for fuel, which means the financial impact on some companies is going to be positive. (Maybe not positive enough to make…
Strong agree. Admittedly, there are psychological benefits to writing fewer checks every month, tracking fewer accounts, and all that. But when I was digging out, I was really motivated to bring those interest charges down as fast as possible. Even more than watching the balances come down, watching the bank make less…
David Chang was born in Vienna, Virginia and grew up in Arlington, Virginia. He’s not a foreign-born chef and it’s a pretty big problem that the sentence implies he is.
Defenders of the cash cow sports will point out the positive effects on the other sports. Sure, the football and basketball money rarely makes it out of the athletic department, but it does pay for field hockey and swimming and the upkeep for general fitness facilities. All that helps the school recruit and retain…
I don’t get it. Why would you want more privacy at randomly selected intervals? I guess, as a way to dip your toe in and see if you like DuckDuckGo, it’s a fine first step.
And as far as the switch being hard, as someone who made the switch two or three months ago - not often. The results are comparable. If I need…
The Emperor of Ice-Cream by Wallace Stevens. I’ve been trying to drop the line about “concupiscent curds” into conversation for 30 years now.
I noticed that my kid frequently wants plain noodles with parmesan on them. So I made him cacio e pepe and he loved it.
I gotta say I’m in favor of a general “must have bathrooms” law, although you’re probably right that it’s probably a holdover to try and make it more expensive to run a bar.
Marked bathrooms - I’m gonna guess that’s a holdover from the time when it was the radical SJWs who thought unaccompanied ladies should be…
Take your damned star.
Really? What the heck do you keep in your car, a Back Seat of Nails?
I’ve bought tons of these bags from Kroger and I can’t think of one ever ripping. They use pretty durable stuff. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen the zip-top fail either, and I know I’ve seen clamshells pop open.
And KCRW is a real NPR station out of Santa Monica. Neat trick that they share an area code.
Yeah, I played with this yesterday, and the fact that it silences all my app notifications makes it a non-starter. I wish Apple understood that Phone and iMessage are just two apps on my pocket computer, and frankly two of the least interesting ones...
Can apps be whitelisted for Do Not Disturb? I want this desperately, but between Google Voice and Hangouts and Slack, I get a fair number of valid notifications which I do want to get through. (Airline apps telling me my flight’s delayed or cancelled would be another example.)
Hang in there, Jamie.
This I could handle. If it’s all an autistic kid staring at a snowglobe I’m gonna go Annie Wilkes on somebody.

(Although honestly “How Tony Stark Met Your Mother” ought to be a fan video somewhere.)
