Just because they said it doesn’t mean it makes sense. DRM is already here, and it doesn’t happen at the DAC, but before. This change removes the DAC and physical space for the connector, and pushes it outside of the phone.

This makes no sense. They can already do all this in software if they chose to, and the change doesn’t give them any extra power.
