My wife flew them last weekend. She was able to use this on a win8 laptop as well. Even better, was that they didn't block access to the Google hangouts extension on chrome so we could chat during the flight.
I think it's illegal in the sense that when you go online with someone else's account, that's also illegal. When my wife asks me to go into her email because she needs information and she's driving somewhere, technically, that's illegal for the same regards.

It's incredibly rare that I see a download for PC. Lots of stuff to automate and work with macs and oodles of stuff on smartphones but virtually nothing for PC.
