Yes indeed. When you know the origins of otherwise esoteric or arcane phrases, you get to deploy them with confidence and verve, and bamboozle your readers into believing you are a barely-understood genius.

I just recently learned the etymology of the phrase “pig in a poke” which apparently references how livestock was sold in Ye Olden Days. A poke was in fact a bag that was used to carry young pigs to market. A derivative of the word poke is the small bag sewn into clothing which eventually became known as a  “pocket.”

I like it and would step right up to it, but the price is a bit much and the front bumper is cause for concern. I’d need to spend a few minutes underneath and around it with a flashlight before I said yes.

Not clear why Edgar Allan Toe here is only being charged with carrying a concealed firearm when he clearly had it out in full view with the intention of menacing those kids. Do they not have laws against brandishing in Florida?
