This episode has convinced me that Abed is a Dwarf Fortress player. Birthing hundreds of children for the express purpose of laboring  in mines to construct increasingly elaborate palaces and weapons of war? Sounds like a Dwarf Fortress player to me.

They're up against a completely new weapon and foe that they have no idea how to counter, while those same foes have been training for the express purpose of defeating them for years.

Assuming they wanted to eliminate the whole group in one go, this was the only realistic way to do it while still maintaining a degree of secrecy.
