I think Susan is modeled on Maria's actual sister, Sarah, whom she often portrays in her stand-up. I'm speculating that her sister didn't like Maria's depiction of her, and insisted that the Susan character be a best friend.

As far as these things go I would take this over the mess that is going on with Kane or what went on with Winston.
