'The ethical-vigilantism problem gets about five seconds worth of consideration'
And he made a ill thought out commitment to digital, im assuming, like Robert Rodriguez, because of the control it allows him to have.
Ive typed this a couple times but the movie is clearly a comedy and a parody of Action films in the 10 years that preceded it. I cant really defend the JLC stuff as much but she gives a performance that basically saves the movie, playing 2 completely different characters that also happen to be the same person.
But seriously Stallone, not Stone, is the problem with that movie.
That is a weird weird movie. For years i only knew Straithairn as 'The dad from River Wild'.
I saw the trailer for No Escape on a tv at a video store when it came out. Then i heard nothin about it for 10 years and thought i had dreamed it up.
Keanu has an incredibly limited range, he can really only do 2 things-menacing and bemused. But if you keep him in either of those youve got gold.
Ice T is the weak point of that movie. You give it to a great actor w/ that supporting cast and its a huge hit.
Tarantino was actually thought of pretty highly in Hollywood before Pulp Fiction. Tony Scott originally wanted to buy and make Reservoir Dogs, but Quintin decided to do a low budget version himself.
It has some horrible miscasting-ray liotta as the hero? Lance Henriksen as NOT the villain??? But it has one of the great dystopic images in its opening scene.
I can buy not making it movie of the year because Speed was definitely bigger. But it started the 'little girl assassin' trope, launched Luc Besson in America, showed the impact of American/Hong Kong action films on european cinema, and created a movie star out of natalie Portman. Also its just a flat out better movie…
For years i only knew of Bridges as the lead in Blown Away, so the idea that he was this great actor was laughable.
Im actually not a big fan of Dark City, so to me The Crow stands as his great achievement. Hes clearly cashed in though, as I Robot, Knowing and Gods of Egypt show.
I remember the shocked critical reception when Executive Decision came out haha. People thought it was Die Hard on a plane w/ Seagal and Kurt Russell. Then they saw it and realised it was much closer to a 70s high concept thriller.
Keanu has a very interesting career because he continually surprises people by doing the same things hes always done. Rivers Edge, Bill and Ted, and Point Break, showed he could be incredibly watchable in drama, comedy, and action but in the following 25 years people are always shocked when he does just that.
It would be a great action movie, except its a James bond movie, and a terrible one.
Though I think Supremacy is the best Bourne movie, my 2004 pick is Resident Evil Apocalypse. Thats the kind of no nonsense action/horror movie, heavily relient on practical effects, that can no longer be made. Also it estabilished a 15 year franchise and made Milla Jovovich into an international action star.
Unfortunately its been all downhill for Proyas but man talk about a great debut.
The Crow is massively underrated. People dont like the aesthetic, but its a solid revenge movie with an all time great supporting cast and a surprisingly strong acting performance from Brandon Lee.
