Where I live, credit card transactions (for DMV and utilities) are actually done via third parties, not by the DMV or utility company itself, and that is the stated rationale why these fees exist. I don’t live in a state that bans surcharges, so it’s not a way around such laws here.

Most US jurisdictions have something called “deferred imposition” or something like that where the defendant is placed on probabtion and, if he successfully completes the probation, there is no sentencing and therefore no conviction. I hope there is such a process in Arizona, and that it’s used in this case.

Duct tape has been my solution to this for years. I can see how paper surgical tape would work, too. It’s not something I normally carry - and, of course, duct tape is right up there with baling wire and JB Weld in its universal availability chez moi.
