Not every actor can step into a role that demands you to play an iconic figure who captures everything about American spirit and the drive that moved the country forward post World War II. Shepard did it and brought a poetry to the role that the real Yeager never really had, but must have enjoyed.

The A.V. Club really should do an article on The RIght Stuff and its cast. It's amazing how well cast that movie was that even the small, throwaway roles have such interesting actors in them. Great movie, great adaptation.
