Because he is criminally insane. Basically, so mentally ill that we as a society have determined that he lacked the intent to commit the crimes. That doesn’t mean he can be free, because of the impact to public safety. It just mean he lacked the mens rea to be found guilty of the crimes, and lacks the mental capacity

because his lawyer said he was “not of sound mind”

I mean...they could have given him the old spike through the eye...hear that calms people down right quick.

Wouldn’t the draconian solution have been to put him in a normal prison?

I don't think autism is what made him do crime. Other things he has may he treatable.

Pretty much. The idea that “it’s just hacking” is short-sighted and foolish when we live in a society where connected systems can literally be life-or-death affairs. Yeah, this time he hacked R* this time - but what if it had been a hospital? If he’s not capable of remorse and exhibited violence in custody, he’s a

Dude what??  Hacking has potentially devastating consequences.  It should not be a slap on the wrist crime.

Hacking is a dangerous crime. It can do material harm

Did you not read the article, or did you just read the headline and come to comment. This was more than just “hacking” as there appears to be allegations of extortion. The suspect has full on admitted he wants to reoffend, and will more than likely reoffend any chance he gets. How in the world, would house arrest

He’s technically not being punished, he’s being treated. Ideally, at some point he’ll be able to manage his condition so that he’s no longer inclined to crime.

Eh...maybe.

I can’t even watch that video once. Is YouTube broken for anyone else, or just me? It pauses every 3 seconds.

Now playing

Anyone who thinks killing the ultra wealthy is too harsh is entitled to their opinion. However, they should watch this video three times in a row and see if they’ve changed their mind.

No, I’m pretty sure we could solve a large number of issues if we parked a guillotine outside of every gated community.

Everyone says this, but the moment I suggest dragging billionaires into the streets for public executions, suddenly *I* ruined Thanksgiving dinner.

Another thing nobody seems to understand: Money isn’t real. We made it up. Once upon a time it was tied to a real resource (gold, again, only valuable because we all agree it is, not because of its intrinsic utility), but now it’s not, it’s a “fiat currency” tied to the overall strength of the country issuing it.

Pretty sure they understand that just fine, and that “eventually” is very different from “next quarter,” which is all the MBA class generally worries about.

This has been private equity’s strategy for the past decade or two and it has worked insanely, incredibly well for them. The part you’re missing is that you get that margin by increasing the price 10% but also by cutting the workforce 10%. A worse product for more money. But you can ride on the inertia of the work

Part of me wonders if we’ll ever reach a point where the greed gets the better of them. They’ll keep increasing prices because a 10% reduction in sales volume is easily offset by a 20% increase in margins, and once they’ve gone past the tipping point and the product is too expensive for anybody to afford, they’ll just

What the “riches” don’t understand is that eventually things will be too expensive, period, and they will lose all that money they’re hoarding, in recovering the costs.
