I am not sure you understand how betting works. If the favorite wins, they make money (just less so) than if the underdog wins. i.e if you know one side is going to win, there is always a way to bet it so that you make money.

When I used a conventional strap, I used electrical tape to keep everything looking neat and clean...but, for an avid photgrapher wth a DLSR, you are likely far better off getting a strap that attaches to the tripod point so the camera hangs straight down and you will have nicer support on your neck....
