Erik mentioned it briefly but her version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is fantastic. She turned it into what it really was: a gospel song. I also have to mention “Don’t Play That Song” from Spirit in the Dark. The whole album is phenomenal but that track just moves.

This is nothing new. Thomas Frank’s The Wrecking Crew details how this has been standard operating procedure for the GOP since the Reagan era. Their policies cause broken government so when they get thrown out of power, they can bitch about how the government is broken. It’s an ourobouros of grift and hyprocrisy.

My extremely subjective favorites of 2017:

If I got to pick one favorite above all others, it’s going to be “The Waiting”. Love that Byrds-esque guitar intro.

Of all the Petty songs outside of the “hits”, this is my favorite. I think Echo is always overlooked a pretty solid album.

I always took Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers for granted because they were always around. The Greatest Hits album came out when I was in middle school and it was ubiquitous everywhere and with everyone I knew. It took me until I saw them in concert around a dozen years ago to realize how really great that album was.

Yeah, I really hope this brings down the entire NCAA. When you have states that can’t or won’t fund higher education yet universities are building multi-million dollar sports facilities built on unpaid labor, priorities need to change. Going after the money is really the only way to scare those who benefit.

I seriously hope that almost everyone takes a knee tomorrow. These same chucklefucks that support Trump won’t know what to do: support him and his statements or continue to root for their team. Their heads might explode.

If anyone cares about folk/roots music, I recommend Willie Watson’s Folksinger Vol. 2. It’s a fairly straightforward album of folk covers and his vocals aren’t for everyone, but if you like this genre, I would seek it out.

I think that by focusing on the home front and talking directly with people involved in WWII (instead of historians), The War is a much more emotionally effective film than a straight history. It sounds like this film is much of the same vein in terms of interview subjects, which is a good thing.

Blue Ruin is better because it has some elements of Altman-like deconstruction ideas about revenge thrillers that make it interesting to me. Green Room is an expertly made film but the exploitation film level violence just became too much.

I dont think this expands much on <i>Lost In the Dream<\i> musically but it has everything that I’m looking for from them. “Thinking of a Place” and “Holding On” are standouts for me. I may be projecting but I’m getting a bit of a later-era Dead mixed in with the <i>Tunnel of Love<\i> Springsteen influence.

I’ll be the one to defend Step Brothers. It’s such a ridiculous premise that utilizes Ferrell’s man-child persona perfectly. It may not be a great film but it’s certainly one of the funniest films I’ve seen in the past decade.

Duck Soup has its moments but I agree that Night at the Opera is funnier overall. When watching the Marx Brothers I really only pay attention to jokes and Night at the Opera has better quality ones.
